3G Technology !
3G (or 3-G) is short for third-generation mobile telephone technology. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging).
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System), based on W-CDMA technology, is the solution generally preferred by countries that used GSM, centered in Europe.
3G Cellphones
The term 3G is not new. It has been around for few years, but is only now beginning to make its appearance in cell phone marketing campaigns. Contrary to what people think, 3G is not a term in sophisticated geekspeak, but simply ' THIRD GENERATION '. If that sounds a truffle puzzling, then here’s the rationate for it : according to analists , this technology represents the third generation in cellular technology.
The first generation was Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) seen in 1980s whereas GSM and CDMA, which came out in the 1990s are considered to be the second. Technologies like GPRS-EDGE were considered 2.5.
Each generation herald a significant improvement in cellular bandwidth and services. For instance, GSM and CDMA brought in caller ID and SMS, while GPRS-EDGE and MMS and surfing the net on the cell phone easier. Similarly 3G too represents a huge step forward for cellular technology-- literally, a generation leap.
